I've had a couple of cats over the years and have found they and our dogs got along well together.  They would cuddle to keep warm, play with balls together and even hunt together [if one found something interesting the other one would join in or possibly take over].

Each had their own personality and I found that I could train my cats just as well as I could train my dogs.  The cat training had been purely unintentional and I accidently discovered they were doing things I had trained them to do and I didn't know it.  lol

Our cat Sandy used to love to sleep in our German Shepherd's dog house with him except for when it was hot out. Our dogs often found themselves the recipients of a few good cat 'massages' too hehe when the cats would be so contented they had their claws out purring and kneading the dogs' body ~ now that was something to see.  We had large dogs who never seemed to mind the attention.

Funny thing too the animals often took on each other's character traits ~ the cat would meow when people came and the dog would lick its paws, and there were many more.

I have often thought of getting a cat again but I have developed such a severe allergic reaction to them over the years that I am not willing to risk it.  However, whenever I see cats, I often do take the time to show them some affection which often results in loud purring along with rolling on the back ~ and tummy rubs [yes cats do seem to like tummy rubs too].  Though our acquaintance is often short lived we both enjoy it.
